Praxis Test (PPST)

In accordance with Nebraska law, education students must take the Praxis Series Assessments.  Students take this test at UNO or other colleges.  Students are informed of the dates when the tests are offered.  Students must register for the tests at least five weeks in advance and pay the fees at the time of registration.  Three separate tests are administered to measure basic proficiencies in reading, mathematics, and writing.  These tests may also be taken on a computer at Sylvan Learning Center.

The reading test consists of reading passages that vary from 100 to 200 words.  Forty multiple-choice questions accompany the passages.  The total testing time is 50 minutes.  The skills measured include literal, inferential, and critical comprehension.  Items require restating, clarification, recognizing how passages are organized, and making reasoned, qualitative judgments about the nature and merits of passages.

The mathematics test presents 40 multiple choice items that are completed in 50 minutes.  The test requires fundamental math skills and proficiency in comparing and ordering numbers, interpreting graphic information, using ratios and percentages, applying measurement concepts, and reasoning quantitatively.

The writing test has two separate sections and established 30 minutes for each section.  The first section presents 45 multiple-choice questions on standard English usage and sentence constructions: the second section requires a written response to an essay question.

Minimal scores established by the state of Nebraska are:
170 (316 - CBT) in reading
171 (316 - CBT) in mathematics
172 (318 - CBT) in writing
