Literacy Influences Future Experiences

Gaining preservice teaching experiences in partnership schools is required in early, elementary, middle, and secondary education.  Course work instruction is integrated with practicum sessions at CSM, Girls, Inc and the  partner schools.   These experiences are required for all education students to meet course requirements.

Early Childhood:

  • Students work with children ranging from infancy through early primary grades

  •  Omaha 2000 Early Childhood Education Center located on the CSM campus

  •  Various community based centers and schools

Elementary/Middle Level:

  • In reading and language arts courses, education students from CSM provide reading and language arts instruction and complete assessment procedures for students at Liberty Elementary School, an OPS elementary school with a diverse population.  Liberty has a large population of ELL students.

  • Pre-service teachers are paired with classroom teachers for these experiences.

  • Students observe and assist classroom teachers and provide instruction to students during two classroom sessions a week for 16 weeks.

Middle/Secondary:

  • Students complete practicum hours at various Catholic and public Middle and High Schools and in a special literature program at Girls, Inc.

  • Students  are required to observe and assist classroom teachers and provide instruction for at least 40 hours
