Grade: 1st

NE Standards: 

-         1.1.1  By the end of first grade, students will read and write using a variety of  word recognition strategies at grade one level.

-         1.1.2  By the end of first grade, students will demonstrate phonological awareness and exhibit knowledge of letters and sounds.

-         1.1.3  By the end of first grade, students will demonstrate knowledge of the organization of print when reading and writing.

Integrated discipline:    

-         literature

-         reading comprehension

-         colors

Objectives:

-         The learner will be able to restate color words heard in a poem or story.

-         The learner will be able to look at the color words and state that they are spelled differently.

-         The learner will be able to recognize the color words and match it to the correct color.

Assessment:

-         The students will say the colors mentioned in the book.

-         The students will notice the different spelling in words.

-         The students will color the layers of the birthday cake with the correct color.

Materials:

-         The book “The Birthday Cake”

-         Birthday cake worksheets

-         Crayons

Procedures:

Anticipating Set:

-         Begin by reading a story that has color words in it. 

-         Have the students tell you what colors they heard.

    Vocabulary:

-         red

-         blue

-         green

-         purple

-         yellow

-         black

-         white

-         orange

-         color words

-         differences

    Activities:

-         Write the color words that the students tell you they heard on the board

-         Ask them what they notice is different about the words (hopefully they say spelling).

-         Examine each word with the students.

-         Read the book “The Birthday Cake” with the students.

-         When you get to a color have them predict with color it is, make sure the pictures are covered.

-         After you read the book and they have made all their predictions on the colors, reread it, showing the pictures to tell if they were right or not.

-         Give them a birthday cake to color.

-         Each layer of the cake will have a color word on it, tell them to use recognitions and sounding out skills to decide what color must go there.

    Provision for Special Needs:

            -  Help students with the worksheet, by sounding out the color words with them.

Closure:

-         Show their cakes.

-         Review the color words and correct color.

-         Review strategies to figuring out unknown words
