Grade: 2nd NE Standards: - 4.1.2 By the end of the fourth grade, students will demonstrate the sue of multiple strategies to increase their vocabulary. - 4.1.7 By the end of the fourth grade, students will identify and apply knowledge of the text structure and organizational elements to analyze nonfiction or informational text. - 4.2.1 By the end of the fourth grade, students will write using standard English (conventions) for sentence structure, usage, punctuation, capitalization and spelling. - 4.2.2 By the end of the fourth grade, students will write paragraphs/reports with focus, related ideas, and supporting details. Integrated discipline: - Grammar - Creative writing skills Objectives: - The students will be able to write a story about the snow accurately. - The students will be able to recognize and use new vocabulary related to snow correctly. - The students will be able to express their feelings about snow creatively. Assessment: - The students will use creativity to write a story about what they think of snow. - Students will use correct grammar in writing their stories. - Students will share their stories with the class. Materials: - Snowman paper or paper cut in the shape of a snowman - Pens/pencils Procedures: Anticipating Set: - Ask the students what they think of snow. - Ask them what kind of experiences they have had in the snow. Vocabulary: - snow - snowboarding - hood - snowy - shovel - sweater - snowman - gloves - mittens - snowballs - boots - vest - sledding - scarf - snow pants - snowball fight - hat - skiing - earmuff - ice skating - jacket Activities: - Ask the students to brainstorm activities they like to do in snow. - If possible, go outside and do some of the activities - Show pictures of the activities the you can do in the snow - Give students the snowman paper - Ask them to put a title for the story on the first page - Brainstorm ideas for title words and let them choose from those - On the second snowman page, have them start their story - To prompt the story put up the sentence: I like to ________ in the snow. - Let them write their first page using that sentence - Have them illustrate their first page - On the next page have them use the sentence: I do not like to _________ in the snow. - Let them write their second page using that sentence and have them illustrate. - Remind the students of the brainstorming words and vocabulary to help them write their stories. - Put all the students’ pages together and make a class book about snow. Provision for Special Needs: - Help the students one-on-one when writing their stories. Closure: - Have the students practice reading the story to each other. - Ask the students to comment on what others like and do not like to do in the snow. Reference: |
