Activity Information:
Name of Activity and Description: “Fly Butterfly Fly” is a lesson working on movement with music and literature. The teacher will read a short story to the students and then they will act as though they are a butterfly by flying around the room to music by Chopin. The students will move to the beat of the music. Curriculum Areas: Physical Development and Literature Children (number, ages, etc.): Pre-k to 2nd grade. The whole class can do this together. Assessment/Rationale: - The students will listen to the story correctly. - The students will fly like a butterfly to the music accurately. Objectives: - During this activity the learner will be able to listen to the story correctly. - During this activity the learner will be able to fly to the music accurately. - During this activity the learner will be able to listen to the beat and move at the correct rate, Space and Materials Needed: - Large space to dance and fly around - CD or tape player - Walt #1 by Chopin Procedure: Introduction: - Tell the students they will be dancing to music today, but they must do this quietly so they can hear the music. - Have the students spread out on the floor. Teaching Sequence: - Read the story to the students, tell them to pay close attention so they know when to dance. - Turn on the music at the point in the song where it says to - Tell the students to dance to the beat of the music, - Explain that when the music beat is fast they need to fly fast and when it is slow they need to fly slow and rest. Closure: - Ask the students if they liked to fly like butterflies. - Ask the students if it was easy or difficult for them to hear the change in beat. - Discuss other songs with definite beat changes in them. Evaluation/Follow-up: - During this activity was the learner able to listen to the story correctly? - During this activity was the learner able to fly to music accurately? - During this activity was the learner able to listen to the beat and move at the correct rate?
