Activity Information: Name of activity and description: Rainforest Trees. This lesson focuses on social studies and uses literature to teach about trees in the rainforest. The teacher will read the story “The Great Kapok Tree” and the students will answer questions about rainforest trees and then make their own tree. Curriculum Areas: Social Studies and Art Children (number, ages, etc): Kindergarten to 1st grade. The whole class can do the lesson together. Assessment/Rationale: - The students must answer the questions correctly. - The students must listen to the story attentively to be able to answer questions about it. - The students will make a tree. Objectives: - During this lesson the learner will be able to listen to the story attentively. - During this lesson the learner will be able to answer questions about rainforest trees correctly. - During this lesson the learner will be able to make a tree accurately. - After this lesson the learner will be able to describe rainforest trees accurately. Space and Materials Needed: - The book “The Great Kapok Tree” - Construction paper: Green, brown, and black - Glue - Scissors Procedure: Introduction: - Ask the students questions about trees. - Ask them what types of trees they know of and where they might survive. - Have the students gather to listen to a story. Review the rules of listening to stories. Teaching Sequence: - Tell the students to listen attentively to the story because they will answer questions after it. - Read the story “The Great Kapok Tree” - Ask the students questions about the trees and animals. - Ask what types of animals need the tree to survive. - Ask questions about how the animals came and which made the greatest impression. - Ask questions about cutting down the trees. - Discuss the trees and how they survive. - Discuss how long it takes the trees to grow. - Have the students get construction paper and go to their desks. - Tell the students to make a picture of a rainforest tree using the construction paper. Closure: - Have the students show their trees to the class and discuss what animals live in it and how it grows. - Review about the rainforest trees and animals. - Hang the pictures of the trees up for others to see.
