Grade: 1 Integrated Discipline: Social Skills
NE Standards: 1.4.2 By the end of first grade, students will identify, describe, and create circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles.
Objectives: - To identify a square, triangle, rhombus, trapezoid, and hexagon accurately - To list features of different shapes correctly - To recognize shapes by their features accurately
Assessment: - Students will accurately list features of different shapes. - Students will correctly name the shape being shown.
Provisions for Special Needs: Describe the shapes to the student individually and help list its features.
Materials: Pencil Paper Paper shapes (square, triangle, rhombus, trapezoid, and hexagon) White/Chalk Board
Procedures:
Vocabulary: Rhombus Square Circle Triangle Rectangle Features
Springboard:
T: Explain to the students how there are different shapes.
S: Sit in a place where they can see the teacher and write on a piece of paper.
Activities:
T: Distribute squares to all the children in the class.
S: Collect one square and place in front of them
T: Hold up the square and ask the students to describe the shape.
S: Describe the different aspects of the shape and write them on a piece of paper.
T: Write the students' responses on the board.
S: Raise hand and list the features you found
T: Say the name of each shape.
S: Repeat the name of each shape, following the same procedure for each one: square, triangle, rhombus, trapezoid, and hexagon.
Closure: - Ask the students what shapes they learned about. - Ask the students what the different characteristics of each shape are. - Ask the students where they see these shapes in their everyday lives.
