Grade: 1st NE Standards: - 1.1.1 By the end of first grade, students will read and write using a variety of word recognition strategies at grade one level. - 1.1.2. By the end of first grade, students will demonstrate phonological awareness and exhibit knowledge of letters and sounds - 1.3.1 By the end of first grade, students will identify information gained and complete tasks through listening. Integrated discipline: - Social Skills Objectives: - Students will be able to recognize frequently used sight words. - Students will be able to play a game by recognizing sight words. - Students will be able to read sight words in the context of a story. Assessment: - The student will match correct sight words during the game. - The student will read sight words correctly in the story. Materials: - note cards with sight words written on them (more than one note card per word) - Various books for students to pick from Procedures: Anticipating Set: - Tell the students that they will be playing a game. - Explain that they will learn new sight words while playing this game. - Hand out four cards to each student - Place four cards in the middle of the students. Vocabulary: - New sight words - Recognition - Sight words - Recall Activities: - Have the student who has the largest word in their pile begin. - Tell them to look at their cards and see if it matches one in the middle. - If it does, tell them to read the word correctly. - If their words match and are read correctly, tell them to take both their card and the card in the middle and place it in a keep pile for them. - If word is read incorrectly, explain that they said the word wrong and now it is someone else’s turn. - Make sure all students have four cards at all times and there are always four cards in the middle. - Have them continue to do this, by trying to match their cards with the middle and read it correctly. - Continue to do this until the cards are all matched. - The person with the most cards in their keep pile is considered the winner. - Have them partner up and read all their sight word cards in their keep pile to their partner. Provision for Special Needs: - Help the students find ways to match the cards up. - Give them hints to decide how to read the card correctly. Closure: - Have the students choose a book to read. - As you read the book, have them find their new sight words in it. - Let them read the sight words when they appear. Reference: |
