Grade: 1st

NE Standards: 

-         1.1.1  By the end of first grade, students will read and write using a variety of word recognition strategies at grade one level.

-         1.1.2  By the end of first grade, students will demonstrate phonological awareness and exhibit knowledge of letters and sounds. 

-         1.3.1  By the end of first grade, students will identify information gained and complete tasks through listening.

Integrated discipline:

-         Social Skills

Objectives:

-         The students will be able to recognize objects correctly.

-         The students will be able to match an object with its name accurately.

-         The students will be able to help classmates with matching new words accurately.

Assessment:

-         The students will match the objects they have with the correct name card.

-         The students will tell their peer if they are correct on their matching and help them find the correct answer. 

Materials:

-         index cards

-         objects to be named

-         table space

Procedures:

Anticipating Set:

-         Tell the students that they are going to expand their vocabulary by playing a matching game.

    Vocabulary:

-         the objects

-         matching

    Activities:

-         Have the students pick four or five objects out of a box of objects you have collected

-         Give the students index cards with the names of their objects on it.

-         Help each student match their index card and object once.

-         Tell them to study the words and do their best to try to remember which word goes with which object.

-         Tell the students to mix up their objects and cards.

-         Now have them match the objects with the name cards by themselves.

-         Check their work to see if they are correct.

-         Have them repeat this until they can do it correctly

-         Have the students partner up

-         Tell the students to have their partner try to match their objects to the correct name card.  Have the student who has already done the words help the other student find the correct word. 

-         Tell them to repeat this until both partners can do both sets of objects and words.

    Provision for Special Needs:

-         Help the student match their cards and words several times before having them do it alone.

Closure:

-         The students can tell the class the name of their object and show the word card that matches it.
