Grade: 1 NE Standards: - 1.1.1 By the end of first grade, students will read and write using a variety of word recognition strategies at grade one level - 1.1.3 By the end of first grade, students will demonstrate knowledge of the organization of print when reading and writing. - 1.1.6 By the end of first grade, students will print neatly and correctly. - 1.3.1 By the end of first grade, students will identify information gained and complete tasks through listening. Integrated discipline: - Reading - Writing Objectives: - The students will be able to listen attentively to the story. - The students will be able to say five new words from the story accurately. - The students will be able to write the five new words correctly on paper. - The students will be able to say their five new words accurately when they appear in the story. - The students will be able to make their words correctly using letter tiles. Assessment: - Students will correctly put letter tiles together to make words. - Students will accurately write their new words on paper. - Students will say their new words in the story correctly. Materials: - Wait Skates! By Mildred Johnson - Letter Tiles - Paper - Pens/Pencil Procedures: Anticipating Set: - Introduce the story and state the title. Ask the students to brainstorm what they think it may be about. Vocabulary: - the students new five words - word recognition - letter tiles Activities: - Read the story to the students. Tell them to listen carefully and pick out words they do not know and try to remember them. - After reading the story, have the students tell you their five words or help them find five words in the book. - Have the students write the five words down. - Put the students with a partner and have them read their five words aloud to one another. - Hand out the letter tiles. - Tell the students to use the tiles to make their five words. - Reread the story and tell the students that every time their words appear in the story to say them aloud with you as you read the story. Provision for Special Needs: - Help the student find their five words. - Help them write the words down and make them with the tiles. - Partner up with the student and tell them to say their words to you. Closure: - Reread the story one last time. - Have the students say their words with the story without you saying them. Reference: |
