        Spring 2006

From my student teaching experience I still believe in a Progressivism approach.  I think it is important for students to be well-rounded in all subjects.  I still believe very much in a hands-on approach to learning.  My students seem more engaged and excited about learning by doing, not just completing worksheets.  I have also found that my students enjoy using technology.  I created a WebQuest for my weather unit (see Student Teaching section) and the students have really enjoyed it and ask every day if we are going to use the computers in science.  I use a variety of teaching methods because my students all learn differently.  As I continue to grow as a teacher my philosophy will evolve with new ideas and expanding on old ideas.

Fall 2005

When looking at the five different philosophies of education I found that my philosophy includes aspects of each, with Progressivism being the highest.  I believe in a hands-on approach to learning.  I also believe that my students should be well-developed individuals; being exposed to every subject and not focusing on just one.  The Essentialist and Perennialist in me want my students to have knowledge in all subjects.  I also believe they should be taught more than academics.  Education should foster social, physical, cognitive, and emotional development.  I want my students to be educated for life, not just educated enough to pass a test.

I do not believe that the primary source of learning should come from worksheets and textbooks.  Every child learns differently, and I believe that they should be taught the way they learn.  I will also try to make my lessons as engaging as possible because it is hard to learn when bored.  In my experience as a student I got bored with worksheets that were not challenging me and teach me anything new.  My students will work in cooperative learning groups or as individuals to complete projects or presentations.  I will challenge my students so they will grow in their learning. I will support my students in their achievements and push them to expand on what they already know.  I would ask different levels of questions to get my students to think beyond answering basic knowledge.  I will encourage my students to take risks to reach their full potential.

I want to intrinsically motivate my students and help them develop a passion for learning and include activities that work on building self-esteem.  If students have low self-esteem they are less likely to succeed.  I will set high but reasonable goals for my students and have them set goals for themselves.

I believe that the teacher, students, and parents should all have an active role in the education of the child.  There should be open communication between all involved.  The teacher needs to keep the family informed about the student’s progress and the activities that are happening in the class.  I will encourage the families to stay up-to-date with the progress of their child.

I will work to keep my classroom as safe an environment as possible.  My students should feel accepted in their classroom. I want an environment that is set up so there is a safe community for my students.  I will also set up my classroom to be educationally rich.  I would have an open door policy with the students and ensure them they can talk to me about anything.  I will be a positive role model and make sure that I am always honest and a person of integrity.  I will be honest in all situations because the truth is always the best policy.  If I expect my students to be honest than I need to model being an honest person.

I believe it is important for my students to understand and appreciate various dimensions of human diversity.  I want to promote creativity and divergent thinking for my students.  I will look at ways to get my students think to “outside the box.”  People come from many different cultures, and I want my students to be aware of these different cultures.

There are many things that I need to consider so I can be the best teacher I can be.  My students are the most important and I should do everything I can to give them the best education.   I will need to consider many things as a teacher and I will respect my students, families, and colleagues.
