Lesson Plan         Learning fractions with M & M’s

Josie and Missy

 Grade 2,3           Subject: Math

 NE Standards:

1.1.2 Students will use comparison vocabulary

1.1.2 Students will identify and represent wholes into equal parts for the fractions of one-half, and one-fourth.

 Objectives: The student will understand what the numerator and denominator represents, and is able to read and write fractions in longhand and numerical form.

Provision for special needs: second teacher provides individual help.

Materials:

M & M’s
Plate

Pencil
Paper

Procedures:

      T: Tell students they will be getting a cup of M & M’s, but first must promise not to eat any. Assign groups of two.

T: Distribute candy to students.

T: Have them pour it on their desks.

S: Add total, and write on paper.

   Add each different color and write each down.

   Write out numerically and longhand all different colored fractions.

S: Have students switch places with their partner to check each other’s work.

T: Call on the groups to come to the board to write the fractions the same as on the paper.

 Closure: Allow students to eat M & M’s.

Assessment: Check for understanding by random sample.
