Lesson Plan                                          Magic Numbers

 Grade: 3

 NE Standards:

4.2.1 By the end of fourth grade, students will estimate, add, subtract, multiply,

and divide whole numbers without and with calculators and solve word problems.

 Objectives:

To apply knowledge of basic multiplication problems to find problems that equals the “magic number.”

To speedily increase knowledge of multiplication facts

 Materials:

Dry erase board
Scrap paper
PencilsOne
deck of cards per two students

 Procedures:

T: On board draw a circle with four lines extending from it.  Draw rectangle at the end of

            the extension.

            Write a “magic number” in the circle. Ex. 6

S:  Copy the web onto a piece of scrap paper.

Think of basic multiplication problems that equal the magic number and fill in the rectangles on their paper. (2x3, 3x2, 6x1, 1x6)

T:  Go over answers in class

            Repeat and add difficulty

T:  After “magic numbers”, pass out to each pair of students a deck of cards.

            Explain multiplication card war – first person to multiply two numbers together

            the fastest and has the correct answer wins the cards.

S:  Take out face cards.

            Play war with partner

            Fastest correct answer wins cards

 Closure: Go over multiplication facts together

 Assessment: Students successfully answering problems that equal magic number.  Students have understanding and are able to speed up fact answering.
