Basketball Multiplication
Josie and Missy       

Grade: all ages         Integrated Disciplines: math

NE Standards:

4.2.1 Students will estimate, add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers without and with calculators and solve word problems.

Objectives:

To practice basketball skills.
To practice multiplication skills.
 

Provision for special needs: alternative activity if necessary.
 

Materials:

2 basketballs for each basket
Multiplication facts
Hula hoops
Score cards and pencils
 

Procedures:

T: Place hula hoops at various distances from each basket.

T: Tape a number on each hoop.

T: Assign a number to each basket.

T: Give each student a piece of paper and pencil and split into equal groups at each basket.

S: On signal, students begin shooting from various hula hoop locations.

S: If a shot is made, they multiply the number on the hula hoop by the number on the basket.

S: They then write the answer on the score card.

S: After three minutes, they add the numbers, record the sum, and rotate to the next basket.

S: After playing all baskets, students should add the total of all the scores.
 

Closure: Have students check a partners work.
 

Assessment: Question students during shooting time, and correct papers.
