Lesson Plan Fractions With Oranges

NE Standards:
1.1.2 By the end of the
second grade, students will use comparison vocabulary.
1.1.2 By the end of the second grade, students will identify and represent
wholes into equal parts for the fractions of one-half and one-fourth.
1.1.2 By the end of the
second grade, students will connect number words and numerals to the
quantities they represent.
Objectives:
To understand the
fractions whole, half, and a quarter.
To match the fraction
number with the word.
To learn fraction
vocabulary.
Provision
for special needs:
Have paraprofessional
help individuals
Materials:
cutting board
knife
sack of oranges
paper towels
paper plates
paper
pens
Procedures:
T:
Write fractions on the board. Pull out an orange and say, “ This is a
whole orange.” Write whole on the board. Give the 1st
student to answer, the orange. Cut the orange in half. Ask if the parts are
equal. When they agree, write half on the board, and draw half the
orange. Repeat procedure till every student has a whole, half, or quarter
orange.
S:
Draw circles and shade whole, half, and quarter so they recognize them on
paper.
Closure:
Students decide how to divide orange slices equally among friends, and eat.
Assessment:
Observe individual responses during the activity. Check the shaded circles.
