Teaching Philosophy

My teaching philosophy is based on many different philosophies.  I will use some progressivism philosophies in my classroom by meeting the needs of all of my students.  My students will also have the chance to learn from their mistakes and their achievements.  I will also give my students the chance to use social interactions to help them in their learning.  This is part of the social reconstructive philosophy.  Below I will talk more about how I will use these two philosophies and also use essentialism to teach the children the main facts they need to know.

Children should learn by their experiences and should have the chance to explore many things.  Parents play a big role in a child’s learning experience.  Parents should also allow the children to explore many things outside of school.  When the parents and teachers work together they should expand the child’s knowledge.

The learning environment must be filled with things the children can explore and experience.  The environment should include materials that the kids are familiar with and also items that they haven’t had contact with.  The environment should include centers from dramatic play, subject areas (science, social studies, math, reading, language arts, music) and other significant themes.  Also, included in the learned environment would be activities for the children to work on their social skill and physical fitness, as well as academic areas.  I believe that children should have a daily routine and time schedule.  The children should be informed of any changes before they happen.  A child should have an equal amount of group and individual learning.

Children should know when it is time to work/learn and when it is time to run and play.  All children will have a time to choose what he/she wants to participate in.  They will however, be required to do certain activities in order to accomplish certain goals in the class.  There should always be positive guidance strategies in the classroom and each child will know and clearly understand the expectations of the classroom and the teacher and the consequences that will happen if the rules are not followed.  Discipline will be consistent so children know what is expected of them and will assist children in developing self-control and a positive self-concept.

Each child will be observe while playing, working, and other doing other activities to measure the child’s progress.  I believe that children with special needs should be included in a regular education classroom.  The classroom, school and students will be made aware of the differences/similarities in learning with this child.  The children will also understand that this child is trying to learn just as much as everyone else and deserves the respect of everyone.  Respect for others will be an important foundation for the classroom and will include teachers, parents and children alike.
