River Babies Story: Charity vs Justice

By Daniel Currie (2001), Development and Peace member

Narrator: There once was a man.

John: Ah, that would be me. My name's John.

Narrator: And a woman.

Marsha: That's me. I'm Marsha.

Narrator: And John and Marsha were a couple.

John & Marsha: That would be us.

Narrator: And aren't they a lovely couple.

John & Martha: Gee, thanks.

Narrator: And each evening, John and Marsha would take a walk along the river. On one evening, as they were walking, Marsha stopped suddenly.

John: What is it Marsha? Did you step in something?

Marsha: Yes, but that's not important now. Look! I think there's something floating in the river!

Narrator: They both moved to the edge of the river and strained to see what was out there.

Marsha: Oh, my goodness John. Do you see what I see?

John: I'm not sure... I think it's a ...

Marsha: It's a baby John! There's a baby drowning in the river!!

John: Holy cow! I think you're right Marsha.

Marsha: John, we've got to do something. Quick! Jump in and save the

poor baby before it drowns.

John: What! Why me? You're a stronger swimmer than me.

Marsha: Okay John. Let's decide it fairly. How 'bout ‘Rock, Paper, Scissors?'

John: Ya, right! You know I always lose at that game.

Marsha: Too bad, John. Come on, we don't have much time.

John: Oh, okay. {They start to play paper rock scissors... Narrator tries to interrupt.}

Narrator:: Ah, excuse me. John… Marsha. Helloooooooo! {John and Marsha Ignore Narrator.}

John: Hey! Do you mind?! We're busy here.

Narrator: {In a loud voice.} What are you two doing?!! There's a baby drowning out there and from what I can see, it's a nice shade of blue already!!

Marsha: Ha, ha. I win!!!

John: See, I told you that I always lose at this stupid game.

Marsha: Don't be such a sore loser John. Now get in there and rescue that baby. The narrator's right-- That baby's not looking so good.

John: Okay, okay.

Narrator: So, John jumps in the river, swims out and manages to bring the baby to safety... just in the nick of time. Marsha performs mouth to mouth and after a few life-saving breaths, the baby starts to cough. They wrap the baby in swaddling clothes and lay him in a mang... oh, sorry, wrong story. They wrap the baby in Marsha's coat and head home.

The next night during their evening walk by the river, John and Marsha

stopped to skip stones by the river's edge when all of the sudden Marsha screams.

Marsha: AHHHHH!

John: What is it Marsha?

Marsha: I think there’s another baby in the river.

John: Well, don't even think about playing Rock, Paper, Scissors again—It's your turn tonight.

Marsha: Ohhhh, alright!

Narrator: And so, Marsha leaps in the river and saves the baby. The next evening it was the same thing, except this time there were two

babies floating down the river, so they both jumped in. Evening after evening, they discovered more and more babies in the river

needing to be rescued. Eventually, they got their frends to help and they even convinced the town to set up a tent with a first aid station by the river.

But, night after night, the babies continued to fill the river. More and more people volunteered their time to help save the babies and to provide care for them... first aid, donations of baby food and clothing, people offering to provide foster care until permanent homes could be found. And yet, despite all of their efforts each night it just got busier and busier with more and more babies being pulled from the river. Then one evening, right in the middle of the chaos, while Marsha was looking after yet another baby, a young girl named Sarah, who had been watching everything, came up to Marsha and said...

Sarah: Lady, has anyone ever thought of going up the river to see where all of these babies are coming from?!?!?

Narrator: Exhausted, frustrated and ready to explode, Marsha glares at the girl and shouts back...

Marsha: Can't you see how busy we are? We can hardly keep up. I don't have time to waste wandering up the river. None of us do. These babies need us right now.

Sarah: But, I just thought... {Marsha walks away}
