“Light amidst the Darkness”

  Grade: 8

  Subject: Confirmation

Chapter 5- Confirmed in Holiness: Theological & Cardinal Moral Virtues 

(in  combination with event at Westroads Mall)

  Objectives:

  1. To help students identify and articulate good that results from evil due to actions of others
  2. To help students identify how God works in the world today in the midst of evil and suffering
  3. To connect Westroad even with the Theological and Cardinal Moral Virtues

  Assessment:

  1. Students reflection paper and sharing

  Procedures:

  1. Anticipatory Set: One word that identifies your feeling upon hearing yesterdays news (on board)
    1. Who was the first person you thought about? Why?
    2. Did this event lead you to feel differently about your family last night? Or about a friend with whom you’ve been fighting?

2.   Reflection on interviews and accounts of the event

      a.   Reflect and discuss how they must have felt

      b.   Actions that people in the store took

      3.   Scripture focus: John 1:5

      4.   Student paper reflection (accompanied with background music—4-5 minutes)

      a.   Think of any possible good that came from yesterday’s events…no matter how  

            small

      5.   Students share conclusions (volunteer)—teacher write answers on board

      6.   Introduce Cardinal Moral Virtues (Prudence, Justice, Fortitude) and Theological Virtues  

            (faith, hope, and love)

                 a. Students will identify which virtues can be associated with the good they identified  

                     (on board)

  Closure:

  1. Where is God in the midst?
  2. Our response vs. understanding suffering/tragedy
