What does it mean to be Bi-Lingual? I believe that to be bi-lingual means that one is capable of speaking more than just their native language. To be bi-lingual is to have the ability to speak two different languages fluently. This should not just include being able to properly speak it but also be able to write and read it. If someone is expected to be bi-lingual I think they will be relied on to do much more than just speak the language. Depending on the situation they are in I think it is important that a person can perform different functions with their bi-lingual ability. Again, different situations call for different qualities and needs. When people think of the word b-lingual I believe they assume that means a person can simply speak another language. To be truly bi-lingual has to mean more than that. It must include reading and writing within that language. In my opinion, literacy is a huge part of being able to call yourself bi-lingual. |
